Usera, Chinatown and the district: understand the distances

Usera is a district in southern Madrid, but the walk known as “Chinatown” does not cover its entire area. On a first visit, focus on Marcelo Usera and nearby streets, including Nicolás Sánchez and Dolores Barranco. Shops, façades and dining opportunities give the outing its thread. Exact addresses matter more than arriving at an arbitrary district boundary.

This outing complements the centre's major monuments. It is particularly appealing if you enjoy exploring a neighbourhood through food and shops. Do not expect a uniform backdrop: Spanish businesses and those of other origins stand alongside Chinese establishments. Allow time for a proper meal and keep the route flexible according to appetite, weather and which places are open.

A walk between Marcelo Usera and Nicolás Sánchez

Start near Usera station and head towards the shopping streets. Instead of ticking off a list of restaurants, look at menus and advertised specialities. You can then choose somewhere that suits your taste. Saving a complete address before leaving is useful, particularly if you have booked and need to find a specific entrance.

Walk without blocking doorways or photographing people close up. Shops are not exhibition spaces: ask before taking pictures inside. If a business interests you, enter as a customer and look at its products rather than treating the entire district as a staged attraction. This makes exchanges more natural and avoids turning residents' everyday habits into a spectacle.

What to eat: choose a cuisine rather than simply “Chinese”

The area offers different Chinese regional traditions, including Cantonese and Sichuan cooking. This diversity is a reason to visit Usera. Check whether a restaurant specialises in dim sum, sharing dishes, hotpot or noodles before sitting down. Two establishments with Chinese signs may offer quite different experiences.

For a first meal, choose a few dishes with varied textures and cooking methods. Ask whether portions are individual or intended for the whole table. If you dislike strong heat, mention it when ordering and ask which dishes suit: a quick translation of a recipe name does not predict its intensity. Explain dietary requirements clearly too, especially regarding stocks and sauces.

We do not give an artificial price range for “a meal in Usera”. A bowl of noodles, a hotpot and a multi-dish menu are not comparable. Read the current menu and ask about possible extras before ordering. For dining habits and other city cuisines, see where to eat in Madrid.

Food shops: take home something useful

Food shops extend the experience beyond the restaurant. Look at teas, sauces or dried products and choose something easy to use at home. Read storage instructions, weight and packaging before deciding. Fresh food bought at the beginning of a long walk needs different handling from a sealed packet in a bag.

Do not assume every shop shares opening hours or accepts the same payment methods. Leave shopping until the end if you plan to walk to the river afterwards. If flying, consider volume and the rules applying to your journey. Taking home a product whose use you understand is more useful than collecting packages solely for their appearance.

Chinese New Year: an outing tied to the programme

A dragon in Madrid's 2025 Chinese New Year parade

Usera hosts Madrid's main Chinese New Year celebrations. Parades, cultural events and activities vary between editions. The lunar calendar's new year date does not mean every event happens that day. For a winter visit, check the dates, meeting points and access arrangements announced for the relevant edition.

The photograph shows the 2025 parade, not year-round entertainment. A normal October walk will therefore look different from a festival day. If travelling specifically for the parade, arrive with time to spare and choose a viewpoint that does not obstruct the route. With children or limited mobility, consider how to leave the crowd and where to take a break.

Other neighbourhood details and the closed market

Moscardó has sundials incorporated into building façades. They encourage you to look up and notice the buildings without seeking entry to private homes. The panda sculpture at the junction of Pilarica and Julio Merino is another small walking landmark. Plaza de las Tizas, with its red dragon-shaped playground, offers another possible stop with children; it is the location shown in the cover photograph. These details add variety to a food outing, but do not by themselves justify an entire day of sightseeing.

In October 2026, the tourism office lists Usera Market as temporarily closed for works. Do not plan lunch around entering the stalls in the building at Calle de Amparo Usera 46. Older opening hours still visible on some pages do not confirm reopening. Check programmes for district art spaces and open-studio days too: a working studio is not automatically open to visitors.

Continue towards Madrid Río and Matadero

Toledo Bridge and the landscaped spaces of Madrid Río

After lunch, Madrid Río offers a walk beside the Manzanares. Choose your river access on a map according to your restaurant and energy levels. The district's proximity does not mean every bridge is immediately nearby: the park stretches a long way and distances vary. The photograph shows the Toledo Bridge area, an extension of the route rather than a Chinatown street.

Across the river, Matadero Madrid is a cultural complex in the former slaughterhouses. It extends the outing into Arganzuela, outside the heart of Usera. Plan a walk through the complex and choose an exhibition or screening from the programme. Access and activity prices vary: check the specific event rather than assuming everything is free.

Towards Lavapiés and La Latina: another half-day

If you want to compare several multicultural sides of Madrid, Lavapiés provides another outing in the centre. It should not be presented as a street next to Usera. Give it a different afternoon or return there by public transport after the river walk. This avoids an excessively long itinerary after a substantial meal.

The El Rastro flea market and Basilica of San Francisco el Grande belong to an extension towards La Latina. El Rastro is a Sunday or public-holiday stop according to its calendar, not a daily market to add to any visit. The basilica has separate opening and admission arrangements. Choose this extension for another theme rather than artificially stretching Chinatown.

A half-day route and a choice table

For a first outing, arrive near Usera, walk through the shopping streets and have lunch at your chosen restaurant. Shop after eating if you do not want to carry purchases for long. Continue to Madrid Río or finish with a neighbourhood break. Allow around three to four hours including the meal; this estimate depends on the restaurant and time spent browsing.

Your priority Suggested outing What to check
Chinese food Shopping streets and a meal Menu, booking and specialities
Relaxed walk Usera then Madrid Río Walking route and weather
Culture Usera then Matadero Programme and activity ticket
Chinese New Year Outing dedicated to celebrations Dates and route for that edition
Central markets Separate trip to El Rastro Sunday or public holiday, calendar

Prices checked in October 2026: walking the streets and Madrid Río is free; meals, purchases, transport and cultural activities are separate expenses. No unconfirmed restaurant prices appear in this table.

Transport, comfort and accommodation choices

Usera station, line 6, is the main reference point for this first walk. Almendrales, line 3, and Plaza Elíptica, lines 6 and 11, serve other parts of the district. Choose according to your exact destination and check network conditions before leaving. The right stop for a restaurant may differ from the best starting point for the river.

When choosing accommodation, compare journey times to your main visits rather than only room prices. A stay focused on Paseo del Arte museums has different needs from a family visit in southern Madrid. With a pushchair or reduced mobility, check station exits and the entrance to your booked restaurant. Comfort depends on these details and the actual length of your loop.
