Lavapiés

Updated on October 1, 2026

South-east of the historic centre, Lavapiés grew up in the Middle Ages outside the city walls and expanded after the royal court settled in Madrid in 1561. A working-class district since the 16th century, it has kept its sloping streets and its "corralas", apartment blocks whose homes open onto galleries around an inner courtyard. Residents from the Maghreb, sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America have made it Madrid's most cosmopolitan neighbourhood. People come for the world food, the bars and a busy cultural life: a national theatre, the film archive's cinema, a free art centre. The Reina Sofía museum, home to Picasso's Guernica, is about a ten-minute walk from Plaza de Lavapiés.

Highlights

La Corrala

La Corrala

Built in 1872 on the corner of Calle Tribulete and Calle Sombrerete, its galleried façade faces Calle Mesón de Paredes. It is the best-known example of this type of working-class housing in old Madrid; it inspired the zarzuela "La Revoltosa" and was declared a national monument in 1977. People live here, so you view it from the street.

Cine Doré (Filmoteca Española)

Cine Doré (Filmoteca Española)

Opened in 1912, this cinema with an Art Nouveau façade on Calle Santa Isabel has been the screening venue of the Spanish film archive since 1989. Tuesday to Sunday (except public holidays), it shows restored classics, themed seasons and foreign films in their original language, for €3 a screening (price checked in October 2026). In July and August, an open-air screen joins the two indoor auditoriums.

Mercado de San Fernando

Mercado de San Fernando

At number 41 Calle de Embajadores, this neighbourhood market mixes traditional stalls, world-food counters and a bookshop that sells books by weight. It opens Tuesday to Thursday from 9am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 11pm, Sunday from 11am to 6pm, and Monday from 9am to 2:30pm and 5:30pm to 10pm.

Plaza de Lavapiés, Tabacalera and Teatro Valle-Inclán

On the square, the Teatro Valle-Inclán, opened in 2006 on the site of the former Olimpia theatre and cinema, is one of the two venues of the Centro Dramático Nacional. Further down Calle de Embajadores, the former tobacco factory (1780-1792) houses Tabacalera Promoción del Arte, a free exhibition centre for photography and contemporary art, open Tuesday to Friday from 12pm to 8pm and at weekends and on public holidays from 11am to 8pm (closed Mondays).

Tips

Indian, Pakistani, Moroccan, Lebanese, African or Latin American restaurants: Lavapiés is the place in Madrid to eat food from around the world on a budget, and Calle Argumosa is lined with bars and terraces. At Cine Doré, tickets go on sale online three days before the screening, from 5pm, or at the box office on the day; popular screenings sell out fast. In the evening the area is lively and busy, but thefts and small-scale drug dealing are regularly reported late at night around Plaza de Lavapiés, Plaza Nelson Mandela and Tirso de Molina: keep your belongings close and stick to busy streets on the way home. The Tapapiés tapas festival, usually held in the autumn, is not taking place in 2026.
