San Fernando Market (Lavapiés): neighbourhood market, bars and local makers

Updated on October 9, 2026

At 41 Calle Embajadores, San Fernando market has stood on the same site since 1944, in the heart of Lavapiés. It mixes traditional fresh-food traders, newer shops, bars and cultural activities. The atmosphere is that of the neighbourhood: cosmopolitan, relaxed and far less touristy than the food halls of the historic centre.

Highlights

The hall and its stalls

The hall and its stalls

Walk past the fresh produce stalls, then the bars and small shops. Businesses change over time: what you see depends on the traders present on the day.

The market bars

A drink or tapas break between two stalls is the easiest way to enjoy the place. Prices are those displayed by each bar.

The surrounding neighbourhood

The market combines well with a stroll through Lavapiés and its lively streets, then the Rastro on Sunday.

Tips

Admission is free; purchases and drinks are paid for at each trader's prices. The market's general hours are wider than those of each stall, and food traders close earlier than the bars: arrive before the end of the morning to see the fresh stalls.
