Understanding Arganzuela before you set out

Arganzuela is a district rather than one small, uniform neighbourhood. Delicias, Legazpi and the areas near Atocha have different atmospheres and distances. The main stops may look close on a map, but walking also means crossing broad avenues and allowing for detours to the river. Choose one direction and keep the museum visit for the morning instead of repeatedly retracing your steps.

The appeal is the combination of industrial heritage and everyday life. You will find brickwork, metal roof structures, housing and reinvented public spaces rather than a succession of palaces. It makes a good outing after an intensive day at the Prado: you can alternate architecture, a short exhibition and a walk. Cultural programmes change; one closed hall does not mean the whole district is closed.

Delicias: start with the historic trains

Trains and the roof structure of the former Delicias station

The Railway Museum occupies historic Delicias station at Paseo de las Delicias 61, 28045 Madrid. Its main hall lets you compare full-size locomotives and passenger coaches. Allow around an hour and a half, longer if you enjoy technical explanations or are visiting with children who love trains. This is a suggested visiting time, not the length of a compulsory tour.

The main thing to watch is the calendar. On many days the museum closes at 15:00, so arriving after lunch may be too late. Events, including Mercado de Motores, sometimes replace normal museum visits. In October 2026, it also announces closure of its ordinary activity from 16 to 18 October for Brocante. Check your chosen date before building the entire itinerary around the collections.

Do not confuse the museum with Delicias Cercanías station or the metro station of the same name. You need to reach the museum entrance at street level. A transport ticket does not include admission to the collections, and the displayed trains do not provide a service to Atocha. If you have luggage, arrange to leave it elsewhere before your walk.

Matadero: choose an activity in the former halls

Matadero Madrid, at Plaza de Legazpi 8, 28045 Madrid, turns the former slaughterhouse into a cultural complex. Its courtyards and passages are already worth exploring for their brick façades and details. Free access to the outdoor spaces makes it a useful short stop even when you do not plan to visit an exhibition. However, a room open for one event does not give you access to every other hall.

Before setting out, look for something that suits your interests: cinema at Cineteca, dance at Centro Danza Matadero, theatre at Nave 10, design or visual arts. Screenings and performances have their own tickets and times. Madrid Artes Digitales immersive experiences are also separate from the free exhibitions. For a first visit, a walk through the courtyards and one activity are enough; trying to see everything may leave you waiting for different spaces to open.

On a Monday, concentrate on the outdoor areas. Towards the end of the week, combining a walk with an exhibition or screening becomes easier, although events can draw crowds. Find the exact hall on the map and check the name printed on your ticket. Matadero is a group of buildings: reaching the correct address does not always mean you have reached the correct door.

Madrid Río: slow down beside the Manzanares

Toledo Bridge in Madrid Río park

Next to the halls, Madrid Río offers a long riverside walk. From Matadero you can head towards Arganzuela Bridge and then Toledo Bridge, or simply enjoy one part of the park. You do not need to follow the entire river to appreciate the different atmosphere. The best version of this outing depends on your energy, the weather and how long you spend at the museum.

The bridges make useful landmarks. Cross one to see the landscape from the opposite bank, then return over another if you want a loop. Check the paths on the ground before deciding: crossings do not all emerge at exactly the same level. With small children, choose one play area as your destination and bring water rather than planning an uninterrupted walk.

The river is an urban landscape, not a swimming beach. Leisure areas should not be read as permission to swim in the Manzanares. In very hot weather, shorten the walk to a brief connection and spend more time on an indoor activity. In the evening, the light on the brick buildings and bridges can justify a detour on its own, without needing to book a performance.

A half-day or full-day route

For half a day, begin at Delicias in the morning, visit the museum, then head down towards Legazpi. Follow with Matadero and a short stretch of Madrid Río. For a full day, add lunch and a booked cultural activity. Walking between stops is part of the programme: allow some spare time and avoid booking two events too close together.

Stop What to do Suggested time Budget
Railway Museum Main hall and railway collections Around 1h30 General admission €7
Matadero outdoors Architecture and courtyards 30 to 45 minutes Free
Matadero activity Exhibition, film or performance Depends on the event Depends on the programme
Madrid Río Riverside walk and bridges 45 to 90 minutes Free

Prices checked in October 2026. These durations are planning suggestions and do not replace official opening times. Museum concessions are explained in its dedicated page. To keep costs down, skip the paid visit and combine Matadero's outdoor areas with the river. If the railway collection is your priority, first select a day of normal opening and then arrange the rest of the outing.

Continuing towards Atocha and the Paseo del Arte

You can also explore Arganzuela in reverse, from Legazpi to Delicias and then towards Atocha station. This works better for a walk that does not rely on a late railway museum visit. Atocha is a transport and architectural landmark; do not assume you can enter every part of the station, as circulation arrangements may change during building work.

The Reina Sofía and CaixaForum offer two cultural extensions towards the centre. Choose one if you have already spent time at the Railway Museum. A day with three museums leaves little time for the district itself. Check the individual pages for the major Paseo del Arte institutions and book separately: the Delicias ticket is not a shared pass.

Transport, meals and choosing accommodation

Legazpi is served by metro lines 3 and 6, and Delicias by line 3. For a linear outing, arriving at one station and leaving from the other is usually simpler. Check your connection before a late performance, especially if you are staying far from the centre. Riverside paths do not lead directly to every metro entrance.

Keep a lunch break between the museum and Matadero and check your chosen restaurant's opening times. Do not plan a meal around an occasional market: it does not run every day and may change museum access. When choosing accommodation, compare distance to the metro with distance to the places you actually plan to visit; a hotel advertised as “Atocha” may involve a different walk from the one you imagined.
