Choose one area for the day

Area What does it suit? Access to plan
Cercedilla and Fuenfría valley Forests and a first walking day C-8 or bus 684; extra walking to trailheads
Manzanares el Real and La Pedriza Granite scenery and a village with a castle Bus 724; mountain access separate from the village centre
Cotos and Peñalara High-altitude scenery and demanding hikes Transport status and restrictions in the massif
Valsaín and Boca del Asno Forest and walks near the Eresma river Arrange road travel or connections from Segovia
La Granja Heritage and gardens below the mountains Transfer from Segovia; no station at the palace

These areas do not offer interchangeable walks. Reaching a village is one thing; reaching the trailhead and completing a loop is another. Before booking, check the distance from the transport stop to the start, the route's elevation gain, return time and ways to shorten the day. A one-way walk does not suit a return to the same stop without additional arrangements.

Cercedilla: start with the forests

Cercedilla is a useful base served by Cercanías line C-8 and bus 684 from Moncloa. The station is not at every trailhead, so include the approach in your calculations. For a first outing, choose a forest route in the Fuenfría valley approved by the information centre, returning to the same starting point. The forest and scenery are the attraction; reaching a pass or ridge is not essential.

Set off in the morning and treat lunch as a break rather than a destination at a distant restaurant. If you planned a short walk, do not automatically extend it because the first kilometres feel easy: gradients, fatigue and return times matter too. Road access to Las Dehesas can be regulated; a parking space is not guaranteed at weekends. Public transport avoids the search for parking but still requires planning the walk from your stop.

Manzanares el Real and La Pedriza

Manzanares el Real Castle combines heritage and scenery, provided you do not add a long hike on the same day. Bus 724 connects Madrid's Plaza de Castilla with Manzanares el Real. On arrival, distinguish the village from trailheads in La Pedriza. Reaching the massif may require extra walking or a transfer; the bus destination does not guarantee arrival at Canto Cochino.

La Pedriza features granite formations and paths that can be more technical than a forest track. Choose a marked route appropriate for your group and avoid shortcuts between boulders. The park regulates vehicle entry to Canto Cochino and states that the shuttle is currently unavailable. Check the situation before leaving. With children, a short walk and time in the village may be more rewarding than an ambitious loop finished in a rush.

Peñalara: a proper mountain outing

Peñalara's terrain in the Sierra de Guadarrama

Peñalara's visitor centre is at Los Cotos pass. Start by asking about path conditions, restrictions and a route suitable for the weather. Peñalara's summit reaches 2,428 metres: it is not a small hill to add to an improvised walk. The park's published ascent from Cotos is rated difficult; its outward walking time excludes the return, breaks and approach from your transport.

A walk to a viewpoint and a summit ascent require different preparation. With snow or ice, a summer route may demand technical equipment and experience beyond that of a casual walker. Do not treat a blue-sky photograph as evidence of conditions on your visiting day. If the weather or terrain is unsuitable, choose a lower route or return towards Madrid: abandoning a summit is a normal part of planning.

The massif has visitor and vehicle quotas. Groups of 15 people or more must request authorisation and an appointment. Stay on paths, observe closures and do not cross restoration areas to save a few minutes. These rules protect a fragile environment, particularly around glacial landscapes and wetlands; they are not details to sort out after arrival.

Cotos and line C-9: check the actual service

In October 2026, the national park reports that C-9 between Cercedilla and Cotos is closed for works, with replacement road transport provided by Renfe. Before planning your day around this connection, check the service offered for your date: replacement stops, connections and timetables matter just as much as those of the usual train. Do not use an old rail timetable to calculate your return.

If a bus replaces the train, check the boarding point, available places and, above all, the final return. A connection at Cercedilla can substantially lengthen a day from Madrid. Do not buy an excursion or set off on a demanding hike before resolving this journey. To avoid relying on it, choose Cercedilla and a route accessible from the valley, or another area with a confirmed connection.

Valsaín and La Granja: forest and heritage

La Granja Palace below the sierra

On the Segovia side, Valsaín and Boca del Asno offer a forest setting around the Eresma river. The park publishes official routes, including a self-guided trail: choose one rather than improvising a crossing between several recreation areas. Transfers from Segovia need their own planning; a train to Guiomar does not provide direct access to the forest.

La Granja Palace suits a day focused on collections and gardens. Standard self-guided palace admission costs €9, excluding any fees. Fountain displays follow a separate calendar, and the remaining August 2026 sessions were cancelled because of water shortages. The gardens remain an enjoyable walk but do not replace a hike in the national park.

Pack your bag and plan the return

Bring water, a meal or snack, suitable footwear, a warm layer and rain protection. Download the route before leaving Madrid and keep your phone charged. Check AEMET's mountain forecast and the park's notices; central Madrid's conditions do not represent those at the passes. Set a turn-back time based on transport and remaining daylight rather than waiting until you are tired to think about it.

Spend your day in one area. The monastery of El Escorial and Valle de Cuelgamuros are other regional visits to organise separately from a long walk. Cuelgamuros costs €9 for self-guided admission, excluding any fees, and requires a transfer to the monument. Prices checked in October 2026: these admissions exclude transport and are not a package for the sierra.
