Manzanares el Real Castle: closure and day trip advice

Updated on October 5, 2026

The New Castle of Manzanares el Real, also called Castillo de los Mendoza, overlooks the village at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama. Its towers and walls make a photographic stop, but the interior remains closed to the public: the owner's website confirmed no reopening when checked on 4 October 2026. Do not rely on the Comunidad de Madrid's old opening hours or admission prices. The outing still offers exterior views from public spaces, the village and the landscapes of La Pedriza.

Highlights

View its towers and walls from nearby public streets and spaces. This palace-fortress belongs to the late medieval history of the Mendoza family. Photographs show the building but do not establish that its grounds or rooms are currently accessible.

Rounded towers and their upper decoration give the castle its distinctive outline. Treat it as an outdoor stop rather than a scheduled paid visit. Do not enter the grounds or gardens without an explicitly announced opening.

The village and Old Castle

Castillo Viejo is a separate site, not the New Castle of the Mendoza family. Its remains are undergoing archaeological investigation and open on occasional dates; they are not a guaranteed substitute for the closed visit. The village centre provides a walk and a break before returning.

La Pedriza and the mountain scenery

Granite formations give the outing a natural setting. A mountain walk requires a suitable route, water and a weather check; it cannot simply be fitted into whatever time remains before the last bus. The visitor centre can help you choose a route suited to your abilities.

Tips

Read the castle's latest notices before travelling: an old ticket listing or price does not establish that it has reopened. For now, plan a day of village walks and scenery, viewing the castle from public space. Check outward and return services for bus 724; an organised excursion should specify whether it includes only an exterior stop.

How to get there

New Castle of the Mendoza family, Calle Cañada, s/n, 28410 Manzanares el Real, Comunidad de Madrid. Interurban bus 724 from Plaza de Castilla interchange (metro lines 1, 9 and 10) towards Manzanares el Real, followed by a walk through the village. Check return stops and schedules with CRTM.

Opening hours

Best: Exterior in clear weather
Monday-Sunday closed to the public (interior and grounds visit; status checked on 4 October 2026)
