La Granja Royal Palace: gardens, fountains and visiting

Updated on October 5, 2026

At the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama, near Segovia, La Granja combines a Bourbon royal residence with formal French-style gardens. Philip V developed his retreat here in the 18th century; the royal rooms reveal another side of the royal collections. In October 2026, the tapestry museum is temporarily closed for works; three new rooms display paintings from the collections of Philip V and Elisabeth Farnese. Mythological fountains shape the park, but their jets do not run continuously. Allow a full day from Madrid, as the train arrives in Segovia rather than outside the palace.

Highlights

The palace and royal rooms

The garden-facing façade contrasts with the town's quieter spaces. The interior tour explores the royal residence's decoration; allow around one hour for the route.

Paintings from the royal collections

The temporary route opens three rooms devoted to paintings from the collections of Philip V and Elisabeth Farnese. The tapestry museum remains closed while facilities are improved, so do not plan to visit it.

Paths, pools and sculptures form a formal garden against a mountain backdrop. The Baños de Diana are worth seeing even without running water; a photograph of an active fountain does not guarantee a display on your visiting day.

Tips

Self-guided palace admission: €9, reduced €4 for ages 5–16, visitors over 65 and students up to 25 with proof; free for children under 5. Guided tour in Spanish: an €8 supplement, bringing the standard total to €17, excluding any booking fees (prices checked in October 2026). Walking in the gardens is free outside paid fountain displays, which have a separate ticket system and calendar. Patrimonio Nacional cancelled the remaining August 2026 displays, including 25 August, because of water shortages: do not use an old calendar to plan a fountain display. Free palace admission on Wednesdays and Sundays from 15:00 to 18:00 October–March, until 19:00 April–September, for EU citizens, EU residents or work permit holders and Ibero-American citizens, with proof; collect free tickets at the ticket office. Set aside a dedicated day if you want to enjoy the gardens without rushing between several sites.
