Madrid at night, in brief
The centre is lively, lit and busy: you meet families at 11pm and groups at 3am. There is no big area you must "avoid"; there are mainly risky situations: crowds, alcohol, tiredness, phone in hand.

- Theft: the vast majority of problems. See our guide to scams to avoid in Madrid.
- Assaults: rare in the centre, more likely in deserted streets late at night.
- Drinks: watch your glass, as anywhere, and do not accept a drink from a stranger.
Neighbourhoods: where to feel at ease, where to stay alert
| Area | Atmosphere at night | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Malasaña and Chueca | Lively, bars, mixed crowd | Phone theft on terraces |
| La Latina | Tapas, taverns, very busy on Sundays | Narrow streets, few people once bars close |
| Puerta del Sol, Gran Vía | Very busy | Pickpocket zone, touts |
| Calle de la Montera and around | Constant foot traffic | Extra vigilance, frequent thefts |
| Lavapiés | Working-class, multicultural | Relaxed mood, keep an eye on your belongings |
| Parks closed at night (Retiro) | Gates shut | Do not go in; the gates close in the evening |
| Casa de Campo | Isolated | Avoid on foot at night |
A simple rule: after 2am or 3am, prefer streets where there are still people, and avoid deserted shortcuts. For nightlife areas, see Madrid at night.
Habits that save trouble
- Keep your phone and wallet in a closed pocket or a bag worn in front; do not leave your phone on a terrace table.
- Do not go out with all your papers: one card, a little cash and a copy of your ID are enough.
- Tell someone your route home and keep some battery.
- Beware of crowds on the metro and outside clubs: that is where thefts happen.
- If someone offers you "free" entry or a free drink in the street, say no.
Getting home
The metro runs until about 1:30am; after that, the búhos (night buses) leave from Cibeles and taxis remain available. Choosing the right option, with prices, is covered in Taxi, VTC, metro or búho: getting home at night in Madrid. For all transport, see getting around Madrid.
If something goes wrong
- 112: the European emergency number, 24/7, also in English.
- 091: Policía Nacional; 092: municipal police.
- Theft: file a report (denuncia) at a police station, useful for insurance and replacing documents; see scams to avoid.
- Health: see health and emergencies in Madrid.
- Violence against women: 016 is the helpline in Spain.
