The areas to eat around the park

Retiro Park has four sides, each with its own character.
- North side, around the Puerta de Alcalá. The Alcalá and Serrano streets near the Puerta de Alcalá offer cafés, pastry shops and more classic restaurants, aimed at office workers and the Salamanca district.
- West side, towards the Prado. The streets between the Retiro and the Paseo del Prado, around the Jerónimos district, hold hotel restaurants and taverns. It is convenient, but expect places aimed at museum visitors. See also where to eat near the Prado.
- East side, calle de Ibiza and around. The Ibiza neighbourhood, on the local side, has tapas bars and small neighbourhood restaurants, with a covered market nearby. This is the area to favour for a meal away from the tourist crowds.
- South side, towards Atocha and Pacífico. More working-class and simpler, with set-menu bars and cafés used by residents.
Which kind of place to pick
Drop the "terrace with a view" reflex and look instead for:
- The weekday set menu. Many neighbourhood restaurants offer a lunch menu (starter, main, dessert, drink) from Monday to Friday. The price is posted outside: compare two or three menus before sitting down.
- Neighbourhood tapas bars. You order at the bar or at the table, sometimes with a small portion included with the drink, depending on the place. The principle is explained in where to eat in Madrid.
- Pastry shops and cafés for breakfast. A coffee and a tostada or a croissant before the museums open generally cost less at the counter than at a table.
- The nearby covered market. A neighbourhood market is a good option for a quick break; see Madrid's markets.
Pitfalls to avoid
- The terraces by the Great Pond and the gates. They are well placed, but also the most exposed to expensive menus for what they serve. Read the menu before sitting down.
- Picture menus and touts. A waiter pulling you in from the street is rarely a sign of a local table.
- Paella served at any hour. Real paella is made to order, often for two people minimum: beware of ready-made "paella" dishes.
- Timing. Madrileños lunch around 2 pm and dine around 9 pm. A kitchen may be closed between 4 pm and 8 pm: see mealtimes in Madrid.
- Picnicking in the park. It is possible on the lawns, but park rules may forbid some uses (barbecues, heavy drinking); see drinking in the street.
A route for the day
Morning in the park: enter by the Puerta de Alcalá, Great Pond, the Crystal Palace (seen from outside during the works), rose garden. Lunch on calle de Ibiza or nearby streets, away from the gates. In the afternoon: the Royal Botanical Garden or the Cuesta de Moyano towards Atocha. Dine late, as in Madrid.
