Metro and distances
The Salamanca district is served by Serrano and Velázquez (line 4), Núñez de Balboa (lines 5 and 9) and Goya (lines 2 and 4). The Retiro park is 5-10 minutes on foot from hotels near calle de Velázquez. For transport, see our guide to the Madrid metro and buses.
Quiet, safety and shopping
It is one of the safest and quietest districts of Madrid in the evening, with few bars and wide streets. Shopping centres on calle Serrano and calle de Ortega y Gasset. The downside: little nightlife, and fewer cheap tapas than in La Latina or Malasaña.
Our pick
For a first visit with family: a 4-star around Velázquez or the Wellington (Retiro at the door). For budget: the ibis budget Las Ventas. If you want neighbourhood life, see where to stay in Madrid and the best hotels in Madrid by budget.
