Where to Stay in Madrid at a Glance

How This Selection Was Made

The 15 hotels below are real, existing properties, chosen for their location (walkable centre or well connected by metro), their category and their price positioning, in line with the areas we recommend in our guide where to stay in Madrid. This is not an objective ranking or a review tested by Madrid Authority. Prices are indicative nightly rates for a double room: they vary greatly with the season, dates, events and availability; check the exact price for your dates on Booking. Always check the current rate on the hotel's website or a booking platform before deciding. Madrid has no tourist tax as of 1 October 2026.

Budget Hotels and Hostels (€25 to €110 a night)

The calle de las Huertas, a pedestrian street in the Barrio de las Letras

For a solo traveller, a dorm bed is still the cheapest option. Generator Madrid and The Hat Madrid are two very central hostels with dorms and private rooms. For a double room without a dorm, Hostal Persal and Hotel Mayerling are in the heart of the old centre, while ibis budget Madrid Centro Las Ventas is the safe choice outside the centre. In this table, hostels are priced per dorm bed or per private room.

Indicative rates, excluding extras, and subject to wide variation by date.

Tips to Pay Less

  • Choose your dates: summer (July and August) and the heart of winter are often cheaper; prices rise during the San Isidro festivities, Pride, football matches and trade fairs. See our guide to the best time to visit Madrid.
  • Stay near a station rather than in the very centre: from Las Ventas or Chamberí, the metro reaches Sol in 10 to 15 minutes. Lines and tickets are explained in our guide to getting around Madrid.
  • Read what is included: breakfast, towels and lockers are sometimes charged extra in hostels; compare the total price.
  • Beware of unregistered listings: a tourist apartment must display its registration number; never pay outside the booking platform. See scams to avoid in Madrid.

Mid-Range Hotels, Good Value (3-4 stars, €120 to €300 a night)

The Gran Vía at night

This is the most interesting range for a first stay. Hotel Praktik Metropol, Hotel Cortezo and Room Mate Alicia are a few minutes' walk from Sol. Posada del León de Oro is a charming boutique hotel in La Latina, and Only YOU Hotel Atocha suits museum lovers.

Indicative rates, subject to wide variation by date.

Luxury Hotels (5 stars, from €350 a night)

The plaza de Cibeles and the Palacio de Comunicaciones

Madrid's luxury hotels are concentrated around the Paseo del Prado and the Retiro, with two exceptions: Santo Mauro in Chamberí and the Canalejas complex near Sol. The Wellington Hotel & Spa is the entry point to the category, The Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel (formerly the Westin Palace) is a historic grand hotel, the Santo Mauro is a ducal palace, the Four Seasons Hotel Madrid is a few steps from the Puerta del Sol and the Mandarin Oriental Ritz is the palace hotel par excellence.

Indicative rates; palace hotels often show large differences by date.

The Best Hotels in Madrid: Quick Picks by Profile

If you want the short answer to "best hotels in Madrid", here are the picks from the tables above (our selection, not a tested ranking):

  • First visit, best area: between Sol, the Huertas and La Latina. Hotel Cortezo (from €140) and Room Mate Alicia (from €150) are within walking distance of everything.
  • Couple: the Posada del León de Oro (La Latina, from €170) for charm; the Santo Mauro (Chamberí) for a treat. See also Madrid for couples.
  • Family: the Wellington Hotel & Spa (Retiro, pool in season) or Only YOU Hotel Atocha, well placed for museums. See where to stay in Madrid with family.
  • Tight budget: ibis budget Las Ventas (from €60) or Generator Madrid (bed from €25-40).
  • Solo traveller: The Hat Madrid (bed from €30), with a rooftop terrace.
  • Best value: Hotel Praktik Metropol (from €130) and Hostal Persal (from €75).
  • For a treat: the Mandarin Oriental Ritz (from €900) or The Palace (from €450), within walking distance of the Prado.

Common mistakes: booking the cheapest room far from a metro station; not asking for a courtyard room in lively streets (Huertas, Cava Baja, Montera); ignoring air conditioning in July and August; and forgetting that the metro does not run between 1:30 and 6:00. From the airport, see our guide to Madrid-Barajas airport.
