Prices checked in October 2026. Drinks, meals, rowing boats and travel are not included in free admission. Standard rooftop entry therefore costs €12 for a couple, and the theatre audio tour €20. You can also enjoy the whole walk without booking a paid activity.
Do not try to combine every idea in one day. Choose one walk and one main appointment, then allow a comfortable gap between them. This is particularly useful if one of you likes walking and the other prefers spending longer in a garden: a short itinerary leaves room for breaks instead of turning your trip into a sequence of deadlines.
El Capricho: a morning in an ornamental garden

El Capricho Park suits a walk where you take time to discover paths, pavilions and changing views. The Temple of Bacchus is a useful landmark for photographs, but part of the pleasure is simply walking among the trees without a fixed goal. Allow one to two hours in the garden, plus the metro journey to El Capricho, line 5. The entrance is at Paseo de la Alameda de Osuna, 25, 28042 Madrid.
The garden opens only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from 09:00 to 18:30 between October and March and until 21:00 between April and September. Closed on 25 December and 1 January. Admission is free, with capacity limited to 1,000 visitors. Arriving at opening time improves your chances of enjoying the paths before the crowds; it does not guarantee solitude.
Abandon the picnic idea here: eating is prohibited, as are animals, bicycles and skates. Plan your meal after the visit. The bunker is a separate heritage experience requiring a municipal booking; do not make your day together depend on a tour if no places are available. A simple walk around the garden is enough to change the pace of your stay.
Retiro: walking, the lake and time to pause
Retiro Park has the advantage of being central. Enter near Puerta de Alcalá, head to the main lake, then continue along less busy paths. The steps of the Alfonso XII monument are lively: if you want a quiet conversation, continue your loop before choosing a bench. Keep an exit in mind to avoid a long return walk once you start getting tired.
Rowing boats can be an enjoyable activity for two, but they are separate from free park admission. Check the municipal rental service and available slots before including them in your plans; do not assume a boat will be waiting when you arrive. Walking around the lake remains a good alternative if the queue is long or the weather is unhelpful.
The Crystal Palace is closed for restoration, with work announced through 2027. Do not plan an interior visit; the gardens remain the main reason to come. From October to March, the park closes at 22:00, compared with 24:00 between April and September. These hours do not override city council alerts, which can result in closures during bad weather.
Parque del Oeste's rose garden for flowers

The rose garden in Parque del Oeste is a free option for a spring walk as a couple. May and June are the months to favour for roses, although the number of blooms depends on the timing and that year's conditions. Take time to compare the beds, notice the colours and walk through the paths rather than coming just for a photograph at the entrance.
The rose garden has separate hours from the wider park paths: 10:00-18:00 from November to February; 10:00-19:00 from 1 March to 15 April and 16 September to 31 October; 10:00-21:00 from 16 April to 15 September. In autumn, it is therefore unsuitable as a stop after a late dinner. The park is hilly: wear walking shoes even if you intend to follow your outing with a more formal evening.
For a day in western Madrid, combine the rose garden with a walk towards Debod. Leave time for a break between them, particularly in summer. The cable car is closed for refurbishment: do not plan to cross to Casa de Campo that way. A short walk is easier to adapt to your energy than a route built around an unavailable connection.
Debod: enjoy the light without expecting solitude
The area around the Temple of Debod is a well-known sunset spot. The temple's outline and open western outlook make it popular, but you will probably share it with other visitors. Come for the light and the view, without expecting a private setting. Find somewhere to settle without blocking the path and keep conversations at a volume considerate of people around you.
Walking outside does not require a ticket; the interior visit has its own arrangements. For this outing, the exterior is enough. Check the local sunset time that day, then arrive with time to find your way around. In winter, wind can make sitting still uncomfortable; in summer, avoid arriving very early in full sun. Afterwards, head towards Plaza de España to continue your evening.
Círculo de Bellas Artes: plan the view and restaurant separately
The Círculo de Bellas Artes rooftop is a paid alternative for viewing Madrid from above. Standard admission to the rooftop alone is €6 per person, with a €5 reduced rate for eligible visitors. Do not confuse this option with the combined rooftop and exhibition ticket. Entry is via Calle de Marqués de Casa Riera, 2, 28014 Madrid; metro Sevilla or Banco de España, line 2.
Buying a rooftop ticket does not reserve a table in the café-restaurant. If dinner there is your main appointment, make the corresponding reservation; otherwise, go up for the view and eat elsewhere. Online tickets cover certain time slots, with limited availability at weekends; other periods are sold only at the ticket office. Check closure notices before buying, too. A high terrace is exposed to wind, so dress for the weather.
Teatro Real: a cultural visit or an opera evening
Teatro Real, facing Plaza de Oriente, offers two different experiences. To see the building by day, the audio tour costs €10 at the standard rate; it is available in French, English and Spanish on your phone. Offered slots run between 10:30 and 14:30, with last entry at 13:30, depending on the dates available. The main auditorium may be inaccessible for technical reasons: choose the visit for the theatre as a whole rather than expecting exactly the same route on every date.
For an opera evening, first choose the performance, check its duration and select your seats through the official box office. Prices depend on the show and seating category: there is no single rate for budgeting every evening. Schedule dinner before or after according to the actual performance time, and allow enough time to reach the theatre comfortably. A booked performance becomes the fixed point of your day; the walk can adapt to the weather and your energy.
