The first evening: tapas tour or pub crawl
The small-group tapas tour is the calmest: about three hours on foot, with four stops (a gourmet market, a neighbourhood bar, a modern tavern and a century-old bodega); reviews say you meet travellers from around the world. The pub crawl is more festive: one of the best known advertises about 70 people a night, with several bars, a club, games and free shots, and a meeting point in a hostel bar; another 5-hour option leaves from Puerta del Sol from €16, and a third, at €20, includes three bars, shots and club entry. Check the minimum age, the meeting point and any extras before booking. Our guide to tapas in Madrid helps you choose where to have dinner afterwards.
Language exchanges: free and no sign-up
Language exchange nights are the most natural way to talk to locals. According to the tourist office and Time Out: Language Exchange Madrid, free, at the tavern La Fontana de Oro near Puerta del Sol, on Thursdays from 19:30 to 22:30; Hello Lola, one of the oldest exchange bars, on Wednesdays from 20:00 to 23:00, free entry; Tandem Madrid, at the bar Lola09 in Chueca, on Wednesdays from 20:00 to 23:00, no reservation. On Meetup, groups such as "Intercambios de idiomas en bares de Madrid" organise meetups of about 1.5 hours alternating 20-minute rounds in each language; you are usually expected to order at least one drink, and there is no age limit or minimum level.
Hostels, workshops and activities
Hostels that organise evenings are a good starting point for solo travellers; see our guide to hostels in Madrid. A cooking or sangria workshop is also an easy way to start a conversation around a table: see our workshops in Madrid and food tours. For sports clubs and friendship apps, I have not verified a specific offer: search Meetup by your sport or language.
Tips for building connections
Book the first evening as a group rather than waiting to be invited. Come back several times to the same weekly event: that is what creates habits with the other participants. Keep your belongings in front of you in crowded bars, and read our guide to scams to avoid in Madrid.
