Companies present and their hours change: only the company's website or your booking voucher is reliable.
Where to find the desks
At Atocha, follow the “Alquiler de coches” signs from the arrivals hall; if the office is outside the building, your voucher gives the address. At Chamartín most offices are outside, on the car park side: allow a few minutes' walk with luggage. For trains, platforms and connections, see Madrid's train stations.
Station or airport?
The station is simpler if you arrive by train or stay in the centre: you skip the trip to Barajas. The airport usually has more companies and longer hours; see car rental at Madrid-Barajas airport. Compare the total price, deposit and excess rather than the headline rate.
The ZBE: what to know
Madrid Central became the ZBE Distrito Centro. Access depends on the vehicle's DGT environmental label (0, ECO, C, B or none), and the rules have changed several times. Atocha and Chamartín lie outside the core of the zone, but a fine can be sent to the rental company and passed on to you. Check your car's label on the DGT website and the ZBE map of Madrid city council, or better: don't drive into the centre.
Parking and returning the car
Station car parks are paid; their rates change, so check the operator's on site or online. If you spend a night in Madrid before or after the rental, ask your hotel whether it has parking. When returning, leave time to refuel, have the car's condition noted and check the deposit is released.
Leaving Madrid
For Toledo, take the A-42 south; for Segovia, the A-6 and then, depending on your choice, the AP-6 (toll: check the rate first). Leave early in the morning to avoid the M-30 at rush hour. The route and parking on arrival are covered in Toledo and Segovia by car from Madrid; to choose between the two towns, see Toledo or Segovia.
When a car isn't worth it
Within Madrid, don't rent one: metro, buses and walking cover everything. For Toledo and Segovia, the train is often simpler if you only want a day trip. A car makes sense if you link several villages, the sierra, or stay several nights outside Madrid.
Comparing rental companies online helps you see the total price, deposit, excess and cancellation terms before you book.
If you have an accident
On the spot: get to safety, switch on the hazard lights, check for injuries and call emergency services (112 (emergencies)). Fill in the European accident statement with the other driver; call the police if anyone is hurt, if you disagree, if the other driver leaves, or if your rental contract requires it. Photograph the vehicles, the plate, the road and the damage, note the other driver's details, and call the rental company before any repair.
Who pays what: damage to the car is covered by the rental company's protection (CDW), subject to its excess (deductible), or by an excess cover bought with the rental; injuries and medical costs fall under your travel insurance. Travel insurance does not pay for the rental car or for damage to third parties.
SafetyWing covers medical costs after an accident abroad; check the policy's conditions for driving (a licence valid in the country, a helmet on a scooter).
