Toledo, Spain's former capital perched on a rock in a bend of the Tagus, is the most popular day trip from Madrid: the Avant train gets there in about 33 minutes from Atocha station. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, the old town still bears the mark of the Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities who lived there in the Middle Ages: a Gothic cathedral, synagogues, a former mosque, Mudéjar churches and paintings by El Greco. Allow a full day: the cathedral and Santo Tomé alone take two to three hours, and the steep lanes are slow going. In 2026 the cathedral is celebrating the eighth centenary of the start of its construction, with exhibitions and a programme of events.
Highlights

The Cathedral of Saint Mary
Begun in 1226, Spain's primate cathedral is one of the country's great Gothic buildings. The visit takes in the Capilla Mayor, the Baroque Transparente, the choir, the chapter house, the cloister and the sacristy, which holds major works by El Greco, as well as a picture gallery with canvases by Goya, Titian and Caravaggio. Basic ticket 12 € (reduced 8 €, ages 8-14 6 €, free under 8), Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6.30pm and Sunday from 2pm to 6.30pm, entrance through the Puerta Llana. In the evening, the Lumina light show costs 24.90 € (33 € with the daytime ticket).

The Alcázar and the Army Museum
The square fortress towering over the city houses the Museo del Ejército, devoted to Spanish military history. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm (last entry 4.30pm), closed on Mondays; admission 5 €, free on Wednesdays, and for under-18s and over-65s who are EU citizens.
Santo Tomé and The Burial of the Count of Orgaz
This Mudéjar church holds El Greco's most famous painting, painted in 1586-1588 for the chapel where the count is buried. Entry is included in the tourist wristband (4 € on its own).
The synagogues and the Jewish quarter
Santa María la Blanca, a medieval synagogue with white horseshoe arches that became a church in the 15th century, is part of the tourist wristband. The 14th-century Synagogue of El Tránsito houses the Museo Sefardí, devoted to the Jews of Spain: Tuesday to Saturday from 9.30am to 8pm, Sundays and public holidays from 10am to 3pm, closed on Mondays; admission 3 €, free on Saturdays after 2pm and on Sundays.
The tourist wristband (pulsera turística)
Sold for 14 € online or at the ticket office of each monument, it gives access for seven days to seven monuments: the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, the Church of El Salvador, Santo Tomé, the Mosque of Cristo de la Luz, the Jesuit Church (San Ildefonso, with its towers) and the Real Colegio de Doncellas Nobles. These monuments open daily from 10am to 6.45pm; single entry 4 €, free under 11 with an adult. The cathedral and the Alcázar are not included.

The Mirador del Valle
On the far bank of the Tagus, this free viewpoint gives the full view over the city, the cathedral and the Alcázar, at its best late in the day. Allow 35 to 40 minutes on foot, mostly uphill, from the Alcántara bridge, or take city bus 71 to the Ctra. Circunvalación (H. Cigarrales) stop, a 10-minute walk away.

Tips
Buy your train ticket in advance, especially for weekends: the morning Avant trains and the late-afternoon returns fill up quickly. The centre is very steep and cobbled: wear good shoes. From the station, the free Recaredo escalators, near Plaza del Granadal, spare you the steepest climb (allow 20 minutes on foot to the centre). Photography is not allowed inside the cathedral. If you visit at least four of the wristband monuments, it works out cheaper than single tickets. Prices checked in October 2026.
