Cuenca from Madrid: hanging houses and a day trip

Updated on October 9, 2026

Cuenca combines an old town perched between two gorges with an abstract art museum inside the Casas Colgadas. High-speed trains from Madrid make a day return possible, but Fernando Zóbel station is outside the city centre: plan the transfer before booking. Walking around is free, as is the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español. Allow a full day rather than half a day, given the slopes and the transfers on arrival.

Highlights

The town above the gorges

The town above the gorges

The old town stretches along steep terrain between the Júcar and Huécar rivers. Public viewpoints reveal how its façades and houses seem to extend the rock. The photograph shows a panorama of the Huécar area at dusk; staying late only makes sense if your transport arrangements allow it.

The Casas Colgadas

The Casas Colgadas

Their wooden balconies overhang the Huécar gorge. Approach through the old town streets, then view them from the San Pablo bridge area. These buildings are not all open as house museums: cultural access includes the art museum.

The Museo de Arte Abstracto Español

Inside the Casas Colgadas, the Fundación Juan March collection gives you a reason to visit beyond photographing the balconies. Admission is free and the museum closes on Mondays. Tuesday to Friday and public holidays it opens 10:00–14:00 and 16:00–18:00; Saturday afternoons extend to 20:00, while Sunday hours are 10:00–14:30.

Plaza Mayor

The square and cathedral façade are useful landmarks before exploring the lanes. Leave time for lunch and limit yourself to one indoor visit if you arrive late. The cathedral has separate ticketing from the free museum.

Tips

Book your outward and return journeys together and check the Madrid departure station printed on your ticket: services do not all leave from the same station. At Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel use the operating city connection or a taxi; the station is not a reasonable walk from the old town. Museum admission is free, prices checked in October 2026; train fares vary by service and date. Last museum admission is 20 minutes before closing, with galleries cleared 10 minutes before.

How to get there

Casas Colgadas and Museo de Arte Abstracto Español, Calle Canónigos, s/n, 16001 Cuenca. High-speed train Madrid–Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel, followed by the operating city connection or a taxi to the city and old town. Check your Madrid station on the ticket; the arrival station is on Avenida Cerro de la Estrella, outside the centre.
