Chinchón from Madrid: Plaza Mayor and a village day trip

Updated on October 5, 2026

Chinchón, southeast of Madrid, centres on an irregular Plaza Mayor lined with wooden galleries and restaurants. It makes a relaxed day trip: a walk beneath the arcades, a climb to the church and lunch give you a feel for the village. Bus 337 connects it with Madrid; there is no direct train. The square and streets are free to explore, while individual monuments have their own admission arrangements.

Highlights

Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor

Galleries, awnings and houses of different heights frame a square best explored on foot. For certain celebrations it becomes a bullring: the photograph shows this temporary arrangement. Walk beneath the arcades, then step away from the terraces to appreciate the whole setting.

Walk up to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the Torre del Reloj for views over the rooftops. The church holds Goya's Asunción de la Virgen, painted in 1812; access depends on the church's opening arrangements. The clock tower belonged to an earlier church that no longer stands and is separate from the present church.

The counts' castle

The Castillo de los Condes can be appreciated from outside, away from the main square. Do not base your day on an interior tour. The walk chiefly offers a different perspective on the village and surrounding farmland.

A break beneath the galleries

Leave time for lunch instead of rushing from monument to monument. Check the menu before choosing a terrace; meals, drinks and anise products are paid for separately. With a car you can combine Chinchón with Colmenar de Oreja, but one village is enough for an unhurried outing.

Tips

Check the CRTM timetable for bus 337 on your travel day: it currently lists departures from Área Intermodal Atocha and a stop on Avenida Mediterráneo at Conde de Casal. Older guides listing only Conde de Casal as the terminus can be misleading. Locate your return stop when you arrive; Sunday services differ from weekday ones. The square and streets are free to visit, admission information checked in October 2026.

How to get there

Plaza Mayor, 28370 Chinchón, Comunidad de Madrid. Interurban bus 337 Madrid–Chinchón–Valdelaguna, with departures listed at Área Intermodal Atocha and a stop at Av. Mediterráneo (Conde de Casal, metro line 6). Get off in Chinchón and walk to the centre; check the operating departure stop in Madrid before travelling.
