Metro and trains
Sol station brings together metro lines 1, 2 and 3 and the Cercanías: you reach Atocha, Gran Vía or the airport (with a change) without walking. From Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor is 5 minutes on foot. Lines and tickets are detailed in our guide to getting around Madrid.
Noise and safety
The square and nearby pedestrian streets (Preciados, Montera, Arenal) stay busy late, with revellers, street musicians and crowds. Pickpockets are active: bag in front, phone out of sight. Choose a courtyard room, and avoid calle Montera rooms if you sleep lightly.
