Madrid's National Museum of Decorative Arts: visiting guide

Updated on October 5, 2026

The Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas, between Cibeles and the Retiro, explores the history of objects and interiors through furniture, ceramics, textiles and design. Its tiled Valencian kitchen from the 18th century is one of the collection's signature pieces. However, in October 2026 the official website announces the temporary closure of upper floors, including the kitchen's floor; check which galleries are open before travelling specifically to see it. Plan a short visit to the accessible spaces, or allow longer once the permanent route is fully open.

Highlights

A house near the Retiro

A house near the Retiro

The calle Montalbán façade introduces a museum on a smaller scale than the nearby major art galleries. It is an easy addition to a walk around the Prado, subject to the spaces currently open.

The Valencian kitchen, when its gallery is open

Painted tile panels show preparations for entertaining in a wealthy 18th-century home. Examine the clothing, food and chocolate service: the decoration reveals domestic life and its social hierarchies.

The arts of everyday objects

Furniture, ceramics, glass and textiles invite you to consider uses as well as styles. The available route changes with gallery closures; ask reception which parts of the collection can be seen.

Temporary exhibitions

These provide another introduction to decorative arts and design. Admission is free, but check the programme and any occasional closures before visiting.

General admission €3, reduced admission €1.50; prices checked in October 2026. Official pages disagree about whether the second floor is also closed; both report closures on the third and fourth floors. Do not plan on guaranteed access to the Valencian kitchen.
