San Jerónimo el Real, commonly called Los Jerónimos, stands just behind the Prado. This church of Gothic origin recalls the neighbourhood's royal past, before museums came to define the Paseo del Arte. Its monumental staircase and outline contrast with the surrounding buildings. The interior is free to enter, but services and weddings take priority over sightseeing.
Highlights

The church behind the Prado
Look at its shape from the forecourt and nearby garden. It makes an easy stop before or after the museum.

The royal staircase
The monumental staircase was built for the wedding of Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia in 1906. It helps explain the church's ceremonial role.
The interior
Enter quietly to see the nave and chapels. If a ceremony is taking place, enjoy the forecourt and return later.
The cloister and museum
The former cloister belongs to the Prado Museum extension designed by Rafael Moneo. Visiting the church does not include access to the museum galleries; continue towards El Retiro if you prefer to stay outdoors.
