A walk in the Retiro

The Retiro's Great Pond and the Alfonso XII monument

The Retiro park is free and central. In February the trees are bare, but the paths are pleasant in the early afternoon, when the sun is gentlest. Check the closing time for the day: the park closes at 22:00 from October to March. Boat rental depends on the weather; do not take it for granted. The Crystal Palace is an outdoor walking goal (see the Crystal Palace in the Retiro).

Sunset at Debod

The Debod temple at sunset

The Debod temple is one of Madrileños' favourite spots to watch the sun go down. In February the sun sets early in the afternoon; check the time on the day. The place is busy, especially with couples on the 14th: arrive with a margin to find a spot. Dress warmly, because the terrace is open to the wind.

Dinner: book early, read the menu

On 14 February many restaurants serve a special fixed-price menu and may ask for a deposit or a booking with a bank card. Read the cancellation terms and what the menu includes before you accept, and confirm the time: Spaniards dine late, but restaurants often plan two sittings that evening. A show or cultural evening

A show fixes your evening: choose it before the restaurant. The Teatro Real and the theatres of the Gran Vía put on performances; see also concerts in Madrid and musicals in Madrid. Buy only on the official website of the venue or the ticket office it names.
