April weather: mild but changeable

The Retiro's Great Pond in spring

Madrid-Retiro normals April
Average maximum temperature 18.2 °C
Average minimum temperature 7.7 °C
Rainfall about 45 mm
Rainy days about 6.7

Source: climate normals from the Spanish meteorological agency (AEMET), Madrid-Retiro station, 1981-2010 period. These are averages: an afternoon can reach 25 °C or stay below 15 °C. The safest approach is layers (a light jacket, a sweater, a compact umbrella) and a covered activity in reserve: see what to do in Madrid when it rains. For the whole season, read Madrid in spring.

Crowds and prices in April

April is an in-between month. When Easter falls in April, Holy Week fills hotels and trains; in 2027, Easter is on 28 March and Holy Week takes place in March, so April 2027 has no Easter holiday peak. In 2026 it ran from 27 March to 5 April, and in 2028 Easter falls on 16 April: the date changes every year, so check it before fixing your stay. The tennis tournament (below) raises accommodation demand at the end of the month. To choose a neighbourhood, see where to stay in Madrid; to estimate your spending, the Madrid travel budget.

Public holidays and closures

The 2027 calendar of the Community of Madrid lists Holy Thursday (25 March) and Good Friday (26 March) among its holidays: there is no regional holiday in April 2027. Easter Monday is not a holiday in Madrid. Museums and monuments keep their usual hours; only some neighbourhood shops close on procession days. Check opening hours on official sites before a specific visit.

April 2027 events

Mutua Madrid Open: 19 April to 2 May

The ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournaments are played at the Caja Mágica, in the south of the city, from 19 April to 2 May 2027 (25th edition). Tickets are bought in advance on the tournament's official site, and the finals are in high demand. If tennis is not your goal, plan your accommodation with these two weeks in mind.

23 April: Book Day

On 23 April, the anniversary of Cervantes's death, bookshops and streets in the centre host readings and stalls. It is not a public holiday. The big Retiro book fair takes place later, at the end of May or in June: see Madrid in June.

Holy Week: in March in 2027

If you come for the processions, look at Madrid in March and the page on Holy Week in Madrid.

Ideas for April

  • Retiro and Parque del Oeste: open early in the morning and late at night, they are at their best in spring. The page on the Retiro park gives the municipal hours.
  • Quinta de los Molinos: the almond blossom is usually over by April; check the City's recent information before making the trip (page).
  • Museums when it rains: the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen each take half a day; book time slots in advance.
  • Evenings: terraces are pleasant in the early evening, but bring a jacket as soon as the sun sets.
