Hours vary by source: check on site or online the same day. Casa Julio, for example, has queues before 13:00 and at dinner time.

A tortilla and a vermouth

Tortilla de patatas is the classic bar dish. La Ardosa serves it runny, which divides opinion: if you prefer it well cooked, say so. A vermouth and a tapa are enough, taken standing at the counter. For the rest of the day, plaza del Dos de Mayo is five minutes on foot.

Brunch, coffee and chocolate

Around calle del Espíritu Santo and plaza del Dos de Mayo, many cafés serve breakfast and brunch. At weekends most fill up around 11:00: arrive before, or book if the café allows it. For a historic setting, Café Comercial is a good option before or after a walk. Our page on Madrid's historic cafés compares them, and the one on churros and pastries completes the tour.

San Ildefonso market

The San Ildefonso market brings counters of varied cuisines under one roof. It is handy when the group cannot agree, or for a bite between meals. It is busy: avoid Saturday evening if you want quiet.

When to eat

Madrid lunches around 14:00 and dines from 21:00. Many restaurant kitchens close in between. Tapas bars serve all day. The detail is in our guide to mealtimes. After dinner the area stays lively late: see Madrid at night.

Traps and tips

  • Plaza del Dos de Mayo is noisy in the evening: if you eat on a terrace, expect noise until late.
  • On Friday and Saturday evenings, book a seated table or arrive before 20:30.
  • Ask the price before ordering dishes to share.
  • Queues at Casa Julio shrink after 16:00 or before 13:00, according to traveller reports.
