Check before you go: the city's tourism site (esmadrid.com) and the town hall's (madrid.es), where dates are published in autumn.
Choosing your market
- One evening, first trip: the Plaza Mayor, then the Puerta del Sol five minutes' walk away, then the lit-up streets. It is the best-known market (104 stalls in 2025).
- Handmade gifts: the Feria de Artesanía on Recoletos, more ceramics, leather, jewellery and candles than mass-produced souvenirs.
- Avoiding the crowds: the stalls are the same on weekdays, but crowds drop clearly before 6pm on a working day.
What to buy
- Nativity figures and cribs (belenes): figurines, houses, moss and scenery, the quintessential Madrid tradition.
- Tree decorations: baubles, garlands, candles.
- Prank items: the Plaza Mayor stalls sell plenty, especially for 28 December (Día de los Santos Inocentes, Spain's equivalent of April Fools' Day).
- To eat: turrón (nougat), polvorones, and roscón de Reyes from bakeries from late December for Epiphany.
Compare two or three stalls before buying: prices vary from one to the next.
When to go
- Best time: a weekday between 5pm and 7pm, when the lights come on (around 6pm) and crowds are thinner than at weekends.
- Avoid: the long weekend from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December 2026 (Monday 7 is a holiday moved from the 6th, Tuesday 8 is a holiday) and the weekends after it: the Plaza Mayor is then very busy.
- 25 December and 1 January: the Feria de Artesanía is expected to be closed on the 25th; for the Plaza Mayor and 1 January, wait for the official hours and keep a plan B.
- Keep your bag closed in front of you: crowds attract pickpockets, see scams and safety in Madrid.
Getting there by metro
- Plaza Mayor: Sol metro (lines 1, 2, 3) or Ópera (lines 2, 5 and Ramal), 5 to 10 minutes on foot.
- Paseo de Recoletos: Colón (line 4) or Banco de España (line 2).
- On 31 December and 5 January some Sol exits may be closed: get off at a nearby station.
Lights, nativity scenes and Naviluz
The market pairs well with the city's lights (in 2025: switched on 22 November, running to 6 January, every evening from 6pm). The most photographed streets are calle de Alcalá, Gran Vía, Preciados, calle Mayor and calle del Arenal. The city's nativity scene (Cibeles Palace, booking required in 2025) and the Community of Madrid's (Puerta del Sol) are free. Everything is detailed in the Christmas in Madrid page and in what to do in Madrid in December.
The Naviluz bus (double-decker, about 50 minutes) ran from 23 November 2025 to 6 January 2026; the ticket cost €15 for ages 12 to 64 and €7.50 for ages 7 to 11 and 65 and over. The 2026 fare is not published: buy on the official site, naviluz.es; weekend evenings sell out fast.
The lights by private tuk-tuk: to see them without walking in the cold, a private electric tuk-tuk tour of about 1 hour is offered on GetYourGuide (from €39.50; 4.8/5 from 64 reviews, noted in October 2026); book before the 5 to 8 December long weekend.
With children
Children like the stalls of nativity figures and prank items, but crowds make strollers hard to manage in the evening and at weekends: come in the late afternoon on a weekday. Add the Puerta del Sol nativity scene (free, no booking in 2025) and, if the budget allows, the Naviluz. See Madrid with children.
