Prices, hours and closures
The museum is in the Goyeneche palace, calle de Alcalá 13, near Puerta del Sol. According to the academy's 2025 press dossier, it opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 15:00. Free entry: what we could not confirm
We found no free day or free time slot confirmed by the academy. Some lists of free museums mention it without clear detail: do not count on it until you have read it on the official site. For other outings without paying, see free things to do in Madrid.
What you see
The academy, founded in 1752 by Ferdinand VI, is Spain's oldest art institution still active. Goya holds pride of place: its site has a "Goya in the museum" section and a page of selected works. Those following Goya around Madrid will find a route in in the footsteps of Goya in Madrid. Our page on the Real Academia de San Fernando describes the rooms.
Official or Tiqets?
For a museum open only in the morning and early afternoon, the key point is to pick a date when it is open. Tiqets offers no known audio guide or lower rate: the advantage is paying online and knowing the entry time. Read the listing's cancellation terms before paying.
Traps to avoid
- August. The museum is closed all month.
- Afternoons. It closes at 15:00: plan the morning.
- Exhibitions. "Los Moreno, fotógrafos de arte" is announced until 22 November 2026.
- Public holidays. Check those of your stay.
Around the academy
The Puerta del Sol is a few steps away and calle de Alcalá leads to the big museums. For a guided visit of the centre, see the welcome walking tour of Madrid on GetYourGuide, which does not include the academy.
