Three hotels, one verdict each
Hotel pick: Posada del León de Oro (official site read 30 October 2026): on Cava Baja, the tapas street a few minutes' walk from Plaza Mayor, with Doble Corrala, balcony, family, Junior Suite and attic rooms, and a restaurant serving Madrid cooking (cocido, oxtail). Limit: Cava Baja is lively at night; ask for a quiet room.
Hotel pick: Petit Palace Plaza Mayor (official site read 30 October 2026): rooms of 13 to 28 m², buffet breakfast, free bicycles, a lift, and cribs and strollers at no charge. Limit: the Double Small is only 13 m²; with luggage, choose at least the 20 m² Double.
Hotel pick: Hotel Ópera (official site read 30 October 2026): Ópera metro about 140 m away, Royal Palace 150 m, Teatro Real 100 m, Plaza Mayor 500 m; family rooms and rooms with a private terrace on the 8th floor. Limit: it is a few minutes' walk from the square, not on it.
Noise, price and views
Plaza Mayor and its side streets stay busy late, with terraces open in the evening: ask for an inner-courtyard room or a high floor. Rates swing with the season and weekends; the hotel sites above show no prices, so compare hotels near Plaza Mayor on Booking with free cancellation.
