Halloween or All Saints': two moods

Date Mood For whom
31 October Costumes, parties, theme parks Families, young people, travellers
1 November Religious holiday, national public holiday, flowers at cemeteries Those curious about traditions
Early November Seasonal pastries, classical theatre Food lovers, theatre fans

1 November is a public holiday in Spain: many shops are closed or open for short hours. If it falls on a weekend, check the official calendar of public holidays of the Community of Madrid, which may shift the date. See also public holidays in Madrid.

Theme parks in October

Theme parks usually offer special events in the run-up to Halloween, with sets, make-up and scary-themed trails. The Parque de Atracciones de Madrid and Parque Warner Madrid are among them. Scary content is a poor fit for young children: the official sites state the recommended age. Dates, hours and prices vary from year to year; buy on the official site and do not rely on an offer seen on a third-party site.

Costume parties

In the nightlife districts, see Madrid at night, bars and clubs advertise costume parties around the 31st. The busiest ones sell out: book or arrive early. Do not let your costume hide your face on public transport or at the door of a venue that asks for ID. Watch your belongings in the crowd (see scams to avoid in Madrid).

All Saints' traditions

The Debod temple at night

For All Saints', Madrid families traditionally visit cemeteries and leave flowers. Pastry shops sell buñuelos de viento (cream-filled fritters) and huesos de santo (marzipan rolls). These are seasonal specialities: see churros, pastries and ice cream in Madrid. Theatres often stage "Don Juan Tenorio", a play by José Zorrilla traditionally performed at this time; check the programme, mostly in Spanish.

With children

For a gentle version, look for costume workshops and neighbourhood activities announced by the city's libraries and cultural centres. See also Madrid with children for suitable outings, and Madrid in autumn for the season.
