Mercado de la Cebada is a stop for discovering La Latina's food shops, between Plaza de la Cebada and the streets of the Rastro. Come to browse the stalls, buy produce or look for an open counter offering tastings. The present building dates from 1958 and has two shopping levels: its appearance differs from San Miguel's iron market hall. Allow for a short morning visit, followed by a walk through the surrounding streets.
Highlights

The market building
The vaulted roofs make the building easy to identify from the square. Look at its architecture before going inside; the surroundings and installations shown in older photographs may have changed.

Stalls and galleries
Explore both levels to compare the produce and shops. The fruit, meat and fish stalls show the everyday role of a neighbourhood food market.
La Latina on foot
Continue through the neighbourhood rather than waiting for every counter to serve food. La Cebada can be a stop on your walk even if you do not eat here.

Tips
Entry to the market is free; pay individual traders for purchases and tastings. Check the price, quantity and opening hours of your chosen stall before ordering. The market closes during the middle of the day from Monday to Friday; on Sundays, do not assume it is generally open just because the Rastro takes place nearby.
How to get there
Plaza de la Cebada, s/n, 28005 Madrid. La Latina metro station, line 5. The municipal address also lists the building as number 17 on the square.
