Zarzuela, opera or flamenco
| Show | Where | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Zarzuela | Teatro de la Zarzuela | Those curious about Madrid tradition, audiences who understand Spanish |
| Opera | Teatro Real | International opera fans, year-round programme |
| Flamenco in a tablao | Tablaos in the centre | Travellers short of time: a 1-hour show, no Spanish needed |
Booking and planning
Book on the theatre's official ticket office; opening nights and weekends go first. Performances are often in the evening on weekdays and in the matinee on Sundays. There is no strict dress code: smart clothes will do. Arrive 20 minutes early to find your seat.
Our advice
If you do not speak Spanish, choose flamenco in a tablao for a first evening, and keep zarzuela for a second visit or if the title speaks to you. For a more festive memory of this tradition, see the Paloma festivals, whose zarzuela of the same name is a classic.
