Source: AEMET, normal values for the Madrid-Retiro station (1981-2010). These are averages: the start of the month can stay very hot, and evenings are cooler by the end. Pack light clothes and a thin jacket for the evening. For the whole season, see Madrid in autumn; to compare every month, read the best time to visit Madrid.
Crowds and prices in September
No national public holiday falls in September. The city is livelier than in August: shops and restaurants closed for the holidays reopen, and museum crowds stay moderate compared with spring. Accommodation prices vary with dates and events; compare several neighbourhoods with where to stay in Madrid and estimate your spending with the Madrid travel budget. The big museums often open their autumn exhibitions: check their official sites before booking.
September 2026 events
Noche en Blanco: 12 and 13 September 2026

Noche en Blanco took place on the night of 12 to 13 September 2026, from 9 pm to 7 am: more than 250 cultural institutions opened their doors exceptionally, with concerts, exhibitions and performances. Activities are free, but some require a reservation or create long queues: choose two or three events rather than rushing from place to place. The 2027 dates have not been announced yet.
End of the Veranos de la Villa exhibitions
The main programme of the Veranos de la Villa festival ended on 29 August 2026, but some associated exhibitions continued until 20 September. Check the dates for the current year before travelling.
The start of the cultural season
September marks the return of the season at the Teatro Real, in concert halls and in theatres. Check the official programmes, choose a show and then its time, and check the language or surtitles. The JAZZMADRID festival, announced for 2 October to 30 November 2026, follows in October.
