The short answer

Fares differ a lot between comparison sites. Early bookings on OUIGO or iryo can start in the low teens, while a last-minute AVE ticket costs several times more. Book several weeks ahead for a summer or Easter weekend.

By train

Trains leave from Madrid Puerta de Atocha (some operators use Chamartín). They arrive at Sevilla Santa Justa, about 2 km from the cathedral, a short taxi or bus ride, or 25 minutes on foot. Compare operators on one search engine, then buy on the operator's site. Remember that the cheapest fares usually have no free change. Our guide to Madrid's train stations explains which station each operator uses and how to get there; to reach Atocha from the airport, see Madrid airport to the centre.

By bus

Buses leave from the Estación Sur (Méndez Álvaro) and take about 6 hours, a lot slower than the train for little saving once you book the train early. Take the bus only when trains are sold out or too expensive on your date.

By car

The A-4 is straightforward, with services around Despeñaperros. If you plan to keep the car in Seville, remember that the historic centre has restricted access zones. Our page on renting a car at Madrid's train stations helps if you want to pick it up near Atocha, and one-way rentals cost extra.

Where to sleep in Seville

For a first visit, stay in Santa Cruz, the cathedral area or Arenal, all on foot from the main sights. Search hotels in Seville on Booking.com and check the free cancellation line.

Planning tips

  • A day trip is possible by train (two and a half hours each way) but tiring: one night is better.
  • Summer midday heat in Seville is severe: choose evening trains in July and August.
  • Combine with a stop in Córdoba by train, about 45 minutes from Seville.
