Where to buy and where to smoke

Buying: specialist shop or estanco

A specialist shop is the best way to compare formats and ask about storage. Estancos, recognisable by their yellow and red sign, also sell cigars, with a shorter range. Always ask the price per piece before buying: the gap between a small cigar and a large format is wide.

Where to smoke a cigar in Madrid

Spanish law bans smoking in enclosed public places, bars and restaurants included. What remains are outdoor terraces, which follow local rules, and private clubs for members. Fines for smoking in a banned place run from 30 to 600 EUR according to the sources we read. Read our page on smoking in Madrid: rules and terraces before lighting up.

Taking cigars home

Entering the European Union from a non-EU country, the allowance is 50 cigars per adult; on your return home, your own country's rules apply. US travellers, for example, should check the situation of Cuban cigars with US customs. Keep cigars in their original packaging with the receipt.

An evening around the visit

After the shop, plan a meal: the Madrid food tour tastes several specialities in the centre, and Madrid at night has more evening ideas.
