Station, metro and airport
Atocha station handles high-speed trains (AVE) to Barcelona, Seville, Valencia or Málaga and the suburban trains. The Atocha and Estación del Arte metro stations are on line 1. The Exprés Aeropuerto bus (line 203) links Atocha to the airport 24 hours a day for 5 euros: details in our guide to Madrid-Barajas airport.
Noise, safety and neighbourhood
The Atocha junction is very busy and the streets around the station are deserted late in the evening: prefer streets on the Letras or Prado side. Beware of pickpockets inside the station. Lavapiés, 10 minutes on foot, is lively but more mixed: avoid it at night if you travel alone with luggage.
Our pick
For a very early train: the Hotel Mediodía, facing the station. For comfort: the Only YOU Hotel Atocha. For the museum district: the Room Mate Alicia. Other areas in the best hotels in Madrid by budget and where to stay in Madrid.
