The Milla de Oro at a glance
| Street or place | What you find | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Calle de Serrano | The main axis of luxury boutiques | Start at the upper end and walk down towards the Puerta de Alcalá |
| Calle de Goya and calle de Velázquez | Fashion, shoes, big names | Good to round off a morning on Serrano |
| El Corte Inglés Serrano 47 | Department store with a luxury section | Ask for the tax-free service at the till |
Tax refund: how it works
For the refund, the buyer must live outside the EU, leave the EU with the goods within three months of purchase and have the refund document validated by customs, according to the Agencia Tributaria. Ask for the form at the till with your passport and keep your receipts. The minimum purchase per invoice is set by regulation: ask the salesperson before paying. Items must stay new and visible when validated at the airport.
Planning the visit
Many boutiques close on Sundays and some between 14:00 and 17:00; check each brand's hours before you come. To combine shopping and sightseeing, a guided walk of Madrid crosses the centre, and the page on the Salamanca district details the nearby streets. For more addresses, see local brands and luxury shopping in Madrid.
Where to sleep in Salamanca
Staying in the district saves carrying bags across town and puts the Puerta de Alcalá and the Retiro within walking distance. See our hotels in Salamanca and luxury hotels in Madrid.
