At the western end of Gran Vía, Plaza de España links Madrid's theatre district with the Royal Palace and the Temple of Debod. Redesigned and reopened in November 2021, it has planted walkways, children's play areas and pedestrian connections to nearby gardens. The Cervantes monument, with Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, remains its central landmark. Allow 30 to 45 minutes to explore the square; a trip to the RIU rooftop is a separate, paid visit.
Highlights

Edificio España
Its stepped outline dominates the end of Gran Vía. It houses the RIU Plaza España hotel and its 360º Rooftop Bar on the 27th floor. The terrace offers panoramic views of Madrid; depending on your chosen package, admission is booked or purchased separately from drinks.

Cervantes, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza
The writer sits above his two characters, Don Quixote on horseback and Sancho on his donkey. Look for the figures of Dulcinea and Aldonza beside the monument. This photograph from 2014 shows the monument before the square was redesigned.
The walkways and Torre de Madrid
The white tower has a slimmer outline than Edificio España. Paths across the square lead towards the Temple of Debod or down to the Royal Palace, so you can combine them without setting aside another half day for travel.
