Edificio Metrópolis in Madrid: history, dome and how to see it
The Edificio Metrópolis is the building with the black and gold dome that marks the corner of Calle de Alcalá and the Gran Vía, one of the most reproduced images of Madrid. Built between 1907 and 1911 by the French architects Jules and Raymond Février for the insurance company La Unión y el Fénix, it draws on the Beaux-Arts style. It houses offices: you look at it from the outside, free of charge and at any time, from the pavement or from the neighbouring square.
Highlights

The corner and the dome
The building is designed to be seen from afar, at the end of Calle de Alcalá and at the start of the Gran Vía. Its corner tower carries a black dome with gilded ornaments, crowned with a statue.

The Beaux-Arts façade
Corinthian columns, allegorical statues (trade, agriculture, industry, mining) and sculpted decoration give the façade a very Parisian style. The sculptor Mariano Benlliure took part in the decoration of the central group at the base of the dome.
The winged Victory
The statue at the top is a winged Victory by Federico Coullaut-Valera, placed in 1975. It replaces the original group, a Phoenix with Ganymede, taken away by the insurance company when Metrópolis Seguros bought the building in 1972.
The start of the Gran Vía
The Gran Vía begins here, an avenue cut through the city in the early 20th century. The building is a landmark for setting off on the walk towards the Plaza de España.

Tips
The interior is occupied by offices and is not open to visitors: enjoy the building from the street, preferably in the morning for the light or at dusk when the façades light up. The best viewpoint is from Calle de Alcalá, with the Círculo de Bellas Artes close by: its terrace looks over the dome. Combine with the Gran Vía, the Círculo de Bellas Artes rooftop and the Cibeles Palace. Mind the crossings and narrow pavements at rush hour. See also: the best views in Madrid; Madrid's architecture.
