Madrid to Barcelona by train in 2026: duration, prices, operators and stations

Updated on October 25, 2026

The Madrid to Barcelona train takes about 2 h 30 to 3 h 15 to link Madrid-Puerta de Atocha with Barcelona-Sants. Three operators share the high-speed line: Renfe (AVE), Ouigo and Iryo. The cheapest tickets are on Ouigo, with fares starting at around ten euros according to some sources, while AVE tickets start around €50 (indicative, seen in October 2026: prices vary widely with date and how early you book). Flying only seems faster once airport transfers are counted.

Highlights

Leaving from Atocha

Leaving from Atocha

Most trains leave from Madrid-Puerta de Atocha, in the centre, five minutes by metro from the Prado. Some Renfe services leave from Chamartín: read the station on your ticket.

Choosing an operator

Renfe AVE: fast (about 2 h 30 to 2 h 40 for the quickest), flexible tickets, mid prices. Ouigo: the cheapest, but cabin baggage is limited and extra bags are charged. Iryo: higher comfort, about 3 h. Compare all three for your date, as the cheapest one changes from day to day.

Arriving at Barcelona-Sants

Arriving at Barcelona-Sants

Sants station is linked to the metro (lines 3 and 5) and to commuter trains. Allow 15 to 20 minutes to reach the centre.

Train, plane or bus

The train beats the plane centre to centre; the bus (about 7 to 8 hours) only makes sense on a very tight budget.

Going for the day?

Possible (out in the morning, back in the evening) but tight: 5 to 6 hours of train in total. At least one night there is better; see Madrid or Barcelona to compare.

Practical info

Tips

  • Book as soon as sales open for the lowest prices, especially for weekends and holidays. Arrive at the station 20 to 30 minutes early: a security check applies to high-speed trains. Ouigo tickets are not exchangeable like those of a traditional operator. Always compare the final price with luggage. For Madrid's stations, see Madrid's stations.

How to get there

Madrid-Puerta de Atocha station, Plaza del Emperador Carlos V, 28045 Madrid, Atocha metro (line 1); see Atocha station. Arrival at Barcelona-Sants, Plaça dels Països Catalans, 08014 Barcelona, Sants Estació metro (lines 3 and 5).
